What is a vision board party?

Read my article on vision boards: learn why they are beneficial and how to build them.

A vision board party is exactly what it sounds like: a creative and inspiring evening where you get together with friends or colleagues to visualize and plan your goals. Maybe you’d like to spend 1–2 years abroad in Hong Kong, Sydney or the USA as part of the international VIE program?

Imagine sitting together with magazines, scissors, glue or your laptops, talking about your dreams and creating your personal vision boards. It’s not only motivating, but also an opportunity to inspire and encourage each other. Maybe you can even travel and work together, for example with an internship at a German company in Asia.

Everyone could bring a few old magazines, snacks or creative ideas, and at the end you’ll go home with a clearer view of your goals. Together you can then apply the tips for applications abroad or support each other differently. Don’t be shy with your dreams: You can even become an astronaut by submitting a simple application.

So a vision board party is the perfect way to celebrate the start of the new year or to find new motivation during a challenging phase. Brainstorming together and discussing personal goals can help you gain new perspectives and recognize things that you may have overlooked before.

Creative chaos during the process.

Tips for your vision board party

1. A variety of newspapers & magazines

It’s all about mixing: Grab magazines like Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar or even TIME or Forbes, depending on whether you’re looking for more aesthetics or career topics. Current newspapers are also great, as they cover the hot topics and you’ll find lots of suitable headlines. This will give you the best images, quotes and colors to bring your vision to life.

2. Enough utensils

“Can I have the glue?” or ”Where are the scissors?” Although there were only four of us and we each had 2 pieces of glue and 2 pairs of scissors, there wasn’t enough for everyone in the end. That’s why it’s ideal if there’s one utensil set per person. You don’t need more than glue and scissors. Ideally, everyone can collect what they have at home. Don’t underestimate the basics!

3. Food & drink before (or after)

Designing a vision board requires concentration and creativity. To keep you focused, it’s best to plan eating and drinking before or after the creative part. This keeps your energy fully focused on your goals and you can relax at the end of the evening. Speaking of snacks: Learn how to create your personal branding strategy with the cornflakes method!

Nobody wants salt or sugar on their board and certainly not drinks! After all, it should be so presentable that you could also post it on LinkedIn. Find out here how to optimize your profile so that recruiters love it!

4. Plan enough time for pitches

The best thing about a vision board party? Sharing your vision with others! Allow about 5–15 minutes per person so that everyone has a chance to present their goals on the board or even answer questions.

This not only motivates you, but also inspires everyone else. You may discover completely new sides to each other and suddenly want to open a start-up in Chile and enjoy the benefits of the local start-up program!

Or maybe you’ll start collaborating for the first time and think about who can help whom along the way. For example, you could take a short course together at UAL in London and learn new skills!

5. Let AI analyze your board

Make your vision board even more tangible: Upload a photo of your board and let tools like ChatGPT or other AIs help you analyze your vision. Whether it’s new ideas or tips for implementation, this will help you get the most out of your board. By the way, you shouldn’t send a letter of motivation with applications despite AI.

Prompt:

Analyze this vision board of a [age and information]. What does his/her future look like and what kind of person is he/she?

Make sure it is a JPG or PNG. Avoid photos in HEIC format. The right format is also important for CVs: Avoid these 5 CV myths at all costs.
